You can read the description about the book. It is not a sad book really, just so amazingly sweet and innocent. I am serious when I say it brings me to tears. I have never liked a book so much in the way I like this one. Simple, yet stimulating for a young ones imagination. The length is perfect for a bedtime story. It is easy enough that my son who just turned 7 yrs is able to read it to us no problem. We checked this book out at the library and have had it for over 5 weeks. At times this in itself can be a challenge when trying to buy a quality toy or book that isn't based on the latest show or movie that say Pixar put out that summer. In our home the focus is not on commercial toys and or characters. ![]() I have to say it does take some time to find what I would consider a "good" children's book. I will start by saying I have 4 children ages 7 yrs and under. ![]() 5/9/2023 0 Comments True Blend by Joanne DeMaio![]() She slices only half a stalk before setting the knife down and turning to pull a bottle of Scotch from the high cabinet. ![]() Teaser: Finally Amy moves to the kitchen, picks up a knife and begins slicing celery at the counter. ![]() There is only the sound of falling water then as Grace drops the penny in, silently captivated by its descent, and Amy wonders what she might wish for, if she even knows what a wish is. Her fingers find Grace’s palm and press a penny into it. She bends, her mouth near Grace’s ear, her breath tickling loose wisps of hair. Amy lifts her onto the low stone wall circling the fountain and wraps her arms around her daughter’s waist. In that pool of shimmering wishes, small hopes and secrets are gathered together. Grace wants to toss in a coin, eager to watch it loll back and forth down through the water until it settles with the other coins below. Intro: The wishing fountain sprays silver water droplets arching high above it, looking like liquid stars. True Blend, by Joanne DeMaio, is a compelling love story where truth is veiled by secrets. Today’s featured book is one I’m reviewing for the author, and since I have enjoyed her previous books, I am definitely looking forward to this one. ![]() ![]() Welcome to another Tuesday celebrating bookish events, from Tuesday/First Chapter/Intros, hosted by Bibliophile by the Sea and Teaser Tuesdays hosted by Should Be Reading. ![]() 5/9/2023 0 Comments A month in the country carr![]() ![]() In an essay for Open Letters Monthly, Ingrid Norton praised the novel's subtlety: ![]() The novel explores themes of England's loss of spirituality after the war, and of happiness, melancholy, and nostalgia as Birkin recalls the summer uncovering the mural, when he healed from his wartime experiences and a broken marriage. Though Birkin is an unbeliever, there is prevalent religious symbolism throughout the book, mainly dealing with judgement. At the same time another veteran is employed to look for a grave beyond the churchyard walls. The plot concerns Tom Birkin, a World War I veteran employed to uncover a mural in a village church that was thought to exist under coats of whitewash. The book won the Guardian Fiction Prize in 1980. Carr, first published in 1980 and nominated for the Booker Prize. CupĪ Month in the Country is the fifth novel by J. How Steeple Sinderby Wanderers Won the F.A. ![]() 5/9/2023 0 Comments It happened one summer plot![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I also liked the theme of grief that was presented in the book, although I also would have liked to see that fleshed out a little more as well. Piper meeting her grandmother was one of my favorite scenes in the book (I wish we saw a little more of her) and I genuinely liked the little side plot of Piper and her sister fixing up the bar. As a person who grew up in a coastal town, it was very hashtag relatable. Piper was a really fun character to read about and I loved the town of Westport. In fact, there was plenty to admire here. However, that doesn’t mean I didn’t like the book. It Happened One Summer was hands down one of my most anticipated reads this year, and because I had such high expectations of it, rating it ‘only’ three stars was a little. Piper doesn’t want to catch feelings, she’s going back to LA in a few months time anyways – but maybe it’s already too late? Here she meets a gruff fisherman named Brendan, her polar opposite. After an out-of-control party, her stepfather decides enough is enough and sends her and her sister to a teeny town in Washington to learn some responsibility. In this new Schitt’s Creek-inspired romcom by renowned romance author Tessa Bailey we follow Piper Bellinger, a Hollywood wild child who is used to have the paparazzi follow her every step. ![]() Tropes: Grumpy/sunshine, possessive hero, small town, enemies to lovers (sort of) ![]() 5/9/2023 0 Comments The book push by sapphire![]() ![]() Little Mongo, Precious's first child, to whom she gave birth at the age of 12, turns out to have Down's syndrome and is quickly taken away from her. It's hard to imagine how things could get much worse, but in the course of "Push," Sapphire throws a lot more misfortune Precious's way. She, too, sexually abuses Precious, and treats her as a maidservant around the house. Her mother has not only allowed these rapes to occur, but also beats Precious for stealing her man. ![]() Like Celie in "The Color Purple," the heroine of "Push" is the survivor of a brutal childhood and youth at the age of 16, Claireece or "Precious" as she calls herself, has already had two children by the man she knows as her father. Salinger's "Catcher in the Rye" and mix it up with the feminist sentimentality and anger of Alice Walker's "Color Purple"? The answer is "Push," a much-talked-about first novel by a poet named Sapphire, a novel that manages to be disturbing, affecting and manipulative all at the same time. What do you get if you borrow the notion of an idiosyncratic teen-age narrator from J. ![]() |
